Training Day 1 - FARTleks

Well guys, today was the day. I started training for my half-marathon. Today was 4 miles, and they were brutal..

Okay, okay.. I know you are dying for some more info on the title of this post. The first time I looked at the training schedule I thought what the heck is that?! after laughing hysterically at the fact that it was called a FARTLEK! As it turns out, a fartlek is an endurance training exercise where, in this case, I ran 3 min at a faster pace, followed by 2 min at a slower pace, and I did this for 2 miles. There was a warm up mile before and a cool down mile after, totaling 4 miles. I walked part of my "cool down" mile because, in reality, it was only getting hotter and harder. I did my research before I started training and found a blog that said "it's ok to walk." Can you believe that?! Music to my ears... I keep telling myself, "this is your first big training commitment and the most you've ever run, don't be so hard on yourself."

I am so thankful I am not in this alone. My good friend, Salah (check out her blog salahsays.wordpress.com), is joining me in the torture. Although she is in MUCH better shape than me, running-wise we are roughly on the same page. It is wonderful to be able to encourage each other along the way, even on days we are unable to run together. We both got the Nike+ running app, so we are able to track the other's progress and give each other a little push whenever it's needed. I love this app! I've had it for a while; it really does EVERYTHING! Maps your run, calculates calories burned (to the best of its ability), includes training programs, keeps a record of your runs, allows you to track your friends, and even has its own little motivational voice to coach you along! I totally recommend it :)

During the last mile (my "cool down" mile) my hips started really aching. I realized that if I am going to be putting my body through so much in the next twelve weeks, I really need to be taking care of it better. I'm eating the right food, got the right shoes, and doing the right stretches, but today I added Evening Primrose Oil supplements to my daily vitamin regimen (multivitamin & biotin). Apparently this stuff does everything from treating acne, relieving PMS symptoms, and protecting joints to benefitting hair, skin, and nail growth, making us look younger, and giving us energy!  Tomorrow is a cross-training day, so I'm thinking I'll be attending a Yoga-lates class at 24hour Fitness. I'm sure I will be insanely sore in the morning. I've got some Sweet Potato Quinoa Turkey Chili in the crockpot. Check back later this week to see how my training is going and if this recipe is any good!
